An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, care, and support to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer help with daily activities, chances for recreational activity, and help with appointments and transit. In select instances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or nursing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $13,916 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $12,699 . The state of Connecticut maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing supervises this type of community. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminding residents to take medications, opening medication packages, and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, disease prevention, wellness counseling, and nursing services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, RN conducts consultation with the resident, and he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include assisted living philosophy, aides must pass a competency exam, 10-hour orientation, and applicable regulations.
