My Tour Experience at The McAuley
The McAuley was wonderful! Staff and residents were friendly and vibrant! The offerings and activities were excellent! The cost - especially the (refundable) lump sum - was responsible for my aunt choosing [removed] instead.

Parents just love it
My parents moved into the McAuley in January 2018. They live in the Assisted living part. Mom would have qualified for Independent living, but my father did not. It took them about 6 months to make the adjustment they are in their 90s and had always lived independently. It can be a bit depressing for my mom ( at 91 is as sharp as ever) because many people on her floor have some form of dementia and many have walkers or some physical problem. That being said she has made friends and the staff is fabulous (especially [name removed]). Both of my parents love the food. The activities are great. Their apartment could be updated. but they choose it because the closet. (it is huge) but most people move into an updated apartment. All in all they are very happy. Many of my elementary school friends parents live here as well.

At the MacAuley my mother liked her apartment and made friends with a couple of people on her floor, however, going to the dining room presented a problem for her. Although not explained upon entry to MacAuley, residents who attend the dining room take a table of their own in which they invite the guests they want to fill 6 seats. Residents typically get ‘dressed up’ for dinner and must be invited to a table. My mother, a new resident, was not invited to a table, and felt shunned and alienated. She had the choice of eating in the (less formal) Cafe’, which she declined. This rule bothered me and iI brought up the subject with the director. ‘Why can’t you have people sit where they want so no one is left out?’ He stated that they created a table for those who were not invited to tables...’”But then it was like the table for the misfits, so we stopped doing that,”” My mother became more ill over time and needed more care medically. MacAuley does have day/night nursing care but they were limited to monitoring and not intervention. The staff at the desk are wonderful! They have a library and in-house events. I would consider The MacAuley to be very expensive.

Depressing
I had the pleasure of visiting residents at this facility. Unfortunately I found the apartment to be dusty when it was just cleaned within the past 4 days. Also noted in the stairwells there are no cameras so if some one fall it could be a long wait till they are found!!! That's scary!! And not having food available on Sunday evening is worrisome!!! All in all the place looks like public housing, the staff needs to smile more and step up to the plate!

Transplanted Mew Yorker Takes Root in West Hartford
“With its charming, home-like, new decor and vastly improved food you’d hardly know the McAuley I moved into four and half years ago. Beautifully designed apartments, wonderful, caring community of peer group residents and ideal location, with transportation provided five days a week (medical visits are free), it’s like a brand new facility. I’ve even stopped trying to win the lottery so I could move back to New York.

They only care about money
My uncle has been there for the past three years. At first, it was fine because he was in an independent living situation, but as time went on, he developed dementia. I recently discovered that he has been living without any toilet paper for about 3 weeks because the McAuley "does not supply toilet paper or any other daily living necessities" to their residents. His medical condition is rapidly declining, but they are holding him to a "4 month notice to vacate agreement" that he signed when he entered The McAuley. Shameful!!!

Disappointing food.
My mother lives here and is mostly happy, but continues to complain about the inferior food. This seems to be the main topic of discussion from most of the residents according to her.

Very Honest, Helpful Staff Member
I was in a unique situation. I was looking for my parents who have two levels of competence but wanted to live in the same place. Here they would have had to be in two different rooms and we wanted them to be together. The woman who gave me a tour was very helpful in the sense that she told us this was not the right place for us. She was very honest and said just go with another place. If you found a place where they can stay together, go there. I was impressed with her honesty. She was wonderful.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Connecticut regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Connecticut regulations for Assisted Living.
