Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and assistance for persons who might need a helping hand with everyday activities such as self-administering medication or dressing. Services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing, or dementia care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has specific standards associated with this type of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this community type. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must receive education in a number of fields. These areas include residents’ rights, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, first-aid, and recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians.
