Assisted Living

Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and health care to persons who might require help with bathing or self-administering medication. The services provided often involve aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In certain cases, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or skilled nursing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These include: need for professionall help, the aging process, 10 hours of initial training within the first 4 weeks of employment and 4 additional hours annually, and Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
