An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers care, supervision, and support to self-sufficient seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, outings for recreational activity, and help with transportation and appointments. In select cases, communities may provide “aging in place”, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds . These areas include housekeeping and sanitation procedures, knowledge of community services and resources, Administrators must complete 40 hours of continuing education units every 2 years, and skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care.
