An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, aid, and supervision to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer supervision of care, assistance with the activities of daily life, and opportunities for organized activity. In some situations, communities may offer nursing care, respite, or continuing care. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . The state of California has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, and communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: medication policies and procedures, knowledge required to safely assist with prescribed medications, recognizing signs and symptoms of dementia, and skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration and assistance with self-administration of medications.
