Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized social events and apartment style housing as well as individualized help. The services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select situations, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or skilled nursing. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has specific rules associated with this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, mental illness, and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, medication administration, and resident self-administration of medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include communities choose to provide certain health support services, general responsibility for each resident, assistance with ADLs, and promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These areas include orientation (2 hours), safety training (3 hours), nurse delegation and core diabetes, and specialty training.
