Assisted living communities provide coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as personalized support. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with daily activities, care supervision, and help with appointments and transit. In select situations, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or nursing. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, communities must provide low-sodium, general diabetic, and mechanical soft food diets, and not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of health care treatments, basic personal care services, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, and assistance with ADLs. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, medication administration, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as mental illness, activities and service preferences, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, and significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: nurse delegation and core diabetes, specialty training, HIV/AIDS, and continuing education.
