Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and assistance for persons who need a helping hand with things such as dressing or cooking food. The types of service provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, nursing care, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , mental illness, level of personal care needs, and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, assistance with ADLs, communities choose to provide certain health support services, and administration of health care treatments. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include continuing education, safety training (3 hours), First-aid and CPR, and orientation (2 hours). This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, resident self-administration of medication, and medication administration provided through nurse delegation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, and not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast . Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).
