Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer personal care, social events, and oversight to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with transportation and appointments, opportunities for organized activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) supervises this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, administration of health care treatments, communities choose to provide certain health support services, and general responsibility for each resident. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include resident self-administration of medication, residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, and medication administration provided through nurse delegation. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as activities and service preferences, level of personal care needs, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: continuing education, HIV/AIDS, nurse delegation and core diabetes, and basic training (70 hours). There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).
