Assisted living communities arrange residential living communities and health care for persons who might need help with everyday activities such as cooking or bathing. The types of service provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . Washington maintains a number of provisions related to this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , activities and service preferences, and preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include HIV/AIDS, orientation (2 hours), continuing education, and basic training (70 hours). This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general responsibility for each resident, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, administration of health care treatments, and assistance with ADLs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, medication administration, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room.
