Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual care. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, aid with daily activities, and outings for recreational activity. In select instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, dementia care, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration provided through nurse delegation, resident self-administration of medication, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. Staff must receive education in a variety of subjects. These include: nurse delegation and core diabetes, basic training (70 hours), orientation (2 hours), and First-aid and CPR. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible, and practitioner. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as activities and service preferences, preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, and an initial comprehensive exam including medical history . There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of health care treatments, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, general responsibility for each resident, and basic personal care services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).
