Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, supervision, and personal care to people who are on average 65 years old. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, continuing care, or hospice. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: specialty training, safety training (3 hours), First-aid and CPR, and nurse delegation and core diabetes. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, medication administration provided through nurse delegation, and residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include basic personal care services, general responsibility for each resident, promote each resident’s health, safety, and well-being consistent with the resident negotiated care plan, and communities choose to provide certain health support services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as preferences regarding other issues important to the resident applicant, an initial comprehensive exam including medical history , level of personal care needs, and mental illness. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
