Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and aid for persons who may require a helping hand with everyday activities such as preparing meals or taking medication. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and chances for leisurely activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, respite, or dementia care. In Washington, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $66,000 . The state of Washington maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (Department) governs this type of community. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These include: HIV/AIDS, First-aid and CPR, specialty training, and basic training (70 hours). Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Waiver program–Community Options Program Entry System (COPES).This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include communities choose to provide certain health support services, assistance with ADLs, basic personal care services, and general responsibility for each resident. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents must state whether they will receive medication assistance or medication administration services, medication administration, and medication administration provided through nurse delegation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, practitioner, not exceeding more than 14 hours between the evening meal and breakfast , and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as level of personal care needs, activities and service preferences, significant known behaviors or symptoms that may cause concern or require special care, and mental illness.
