Nursing Homes

A nursing home is an establishment that offers lodging to two or more individuals who have no family ties to the administrator. This type of complex provides its occupants with 24-hour care by on-site nurses. These caregivers offer specialized care for those who are unable to properly take care of themselves.

This type of facility is a familiar and comfortable care alternative for persons 65 years or older, however nursing homes will frequently allow persons 55 and above which is uncommon for other senior care types. Many residents of nursing homes are with interpersonal social issues, which can encompass verbal antagonism, resisting aid, or a tendency to wander. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to have your representative notified about your care, have protections against involuntary transfer or discharge, participate in activities, and form or participate in resident groups. A large portion of nursing home inhabitants are seniors who have incontinence issues, experience difficulty with hearing and vision, have mental or physical disabilities, or require assistance with daily tasks such as getting dressed. A large number of occupants tend to be single women with smaller social support groups, and about half of nursing home residents are over the age of 85. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include specially prepared food, personal clothing, and a private room, unless medically needed.
