Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities administer social opportunities, care, and oversight to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living facilities commonly offer assistance with transportation and appointments, care supervision, and aid with the activities of daily life. In select instances, facilities may provide respite, dementia care, or nursing care. Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of facility. The Virginia Department of Social Services regulates this type of facility. This facility type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professional must annually review all residents’ medications, The facility must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. This type of facility is required to offer a number of services. These include Promote the resident’s involvement with appropriate community resources, Meet the service plan objectives, 24-hour supervision, and Monitoring the facility’s medication management plan and infection control plans. This facility has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: Specific duties and requirements of their positions, Residents’ rights and responsibilities, first-aid and cpr training, and reporting requirments. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program--Virginia Alzheimer’s Assisted Living.
