An assisted living community is a residential community which offers support, care, and assistance to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, hospice, or nursing. Virginia has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services licenses this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, and three nutritious meals must be provided each day. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of subjects. These areas include confidential treatment of personal information, Specific duties and requirements of their positions, reporting requirements, and emergency and disaster plans, including those for evacuating residents.. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., and a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Meet the service plan objectives, Promote a sense of security and self-worth, personal and health care services, and 24-hour supervision.
