An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, assistance, and care to independent individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly provide support with the activities of daily life, help with appointments and transportation, and chances for leisurely activity. In some cases, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Virginia has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services regulates this community type. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include Specific duties and requirements of their positions, hand-washing techniques, standard precautions, and infection risk reduction behavior, emergency and disaster plans, including those for evacuating residents., and first-aid and cpr training. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist, and bedtime and between meal snacks must be available. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Promote a sense of security and self-worth, 24-hour supervision, Promote the resident s involvement with appropriate community resources, and Monitoring the community s medication management plan and infection control plans. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include The community must have a medication management plan that is reviewed and approved by the Department., Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as Initial comprehensive assessment and develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living.
