Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social events, care, and oversight to individuals who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently provide outings for leisurely activity, care supervision, and support with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or continuing care. Virginia has specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Virginia Department of Social Services governs this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include three nutritious meals must be provided each day, bedtime and between meal snacks must be available, and Periodic oversight of special diets by a dietitian or nutritionist. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include procedures for detecting suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation, confidential treatment of personal information, first-aid and cpr training, and emergency and disaster plans, including those for evacuating residents.. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver program–Virginia Alzheimer s Assisted Living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health care professionall must annually review all residents medications, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and Medications may be administered by licensed individuals or by medication aides . This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include Assessing residents for whom restraints are in us, Meet residents physical, mental, emotional, and psychosocial needs, Monitoring the community s medication management plan and infection control plans, and personal and health care services. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as develop a care plan with the input of the resident, family, direct care staff, case manager, and health care providers, as relevant and Initial comprehensive assessment .
