An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers care, assistance, and support to healthy seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly provide help with transportation and appointments, chances for recreational activity, and assistance with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer continuing care, dementia care, or skilled nursing care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance with self-administration of medications, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, and assistance in accessing and coordinating health services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as problematic behaviors, the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months, treatment requirements, and evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: basic food safety, the use of service plans, fire and life safety, and state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be well-balanced, and meals must be properly prepared. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, reminders to take medications, and medication administration.
