Assisted living communities frequently provide support with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and opportunities for organized activity. The state of Maryland maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this type of community. Staff are required to receive training in a number of areas. These include: residents’ rights, the resident assessment process, including standard precautions, and fire and life safety. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications, a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, and medication administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be properly prepared, meals must be palatable, and meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, assessed on psychiatric conditions, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and treatment requirements. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, and assistance with self-administration of medications.
