Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to your loved one who may require support with things such as dressing or self-administering medication. Assisted living communities usually offer opportunities for recreational activity, aid with appointments and transit, and assistance with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, “aging in place”, or respite. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . Maryland maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessed on psychiatric conditions, problematic behaviors, activities of daily living needs, and treatment requirements. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be properly prepared, and meals must be palatable. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, reminders to take medications, and residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: health and psychosocial needs, Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years, basic first-aid, and including standard precautions. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services.
