Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and health care to your loved one who require support with everyday activities such as showering or meal preparation. The services provided often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain cases, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living, assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, risk factor management needs, treatment requirements, and ability to self-administer medication. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, and meals must be palatable. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, health and psychosocial needs, residents’ rights, and Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, medication administration, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission.
