Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, care, and oversight to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with transportation and appointments, aid with the activities of daily life, and opportunities for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Texas maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and assisting residents with taking medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: resident characteristics (including dementia), accessibility requirements, skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics, and abuse/neglect. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, and activity and/or social program for residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
