Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer personal care, recreational activities, and oversight to persons around 65 years of age or older. Services provided often include help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or continuing care. Texas maintains specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities regulates this community type. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include food and nutrition services, federal laws, assisted living standards, and basic emergency first-aid. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of a resident’s medication regimen, returning medications to the proper locked areas, and assisting residents with taking medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, personal care, supervision or direct administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living.
