An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, aid, and supervision to independent seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with appointments and transit, outings for recreational activity, and aid with daily activities. In certain cases, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. The state of Oregon has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight governs this type of community. Staff members receive education in a number of areas. These include: the values of community-based care, emergency procedures, fire safety, and infection control. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as risk indicator assessment, mental health evaluation, ADLs test, and physical health exam. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include maximize physical functioning, health services, transportation services, and assist psychosocial wellbeing.
