Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide healthcare, recreational activities, and supervision to persons who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually offer help with appointments and transportation, assistance with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. Oregon has a number of provisions related to this type of community. Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist psychosocial wellbeing, maximize physical functioning, 24-hour emergency care service, and health services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all food must be in accordance with the Department of Agriculture food pyramid and must provide three meals a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 6. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical health exam, risk indicator assessment, ADLs test, and mental health evaluation. Public assistance is available through Medicaid Aged and Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include residents’ rights, infection control, abuse and reporting requirements, and the values of community-based care.
