Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care to people who require help with things such as self-administering medication or dressing. The services offered often involve help with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer continuing care, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. The state of Ohio has a number of provisions related to this type of community. Ohio Department of Health governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as health history, functional status assessment, psychological history, and psychical history. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders, verifying labels, and observation. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include community procedures, securing emergency assistance, job responsibilities, and residents rights. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, intermittent nursing services, activities, and supervision.
