Assisted living communities provide residential living communities and assistance for persons who might require support with everyday activities such as mobility or dressing. Assisted living communities frequently provide care supervision, aid with daily activities, and chances for organized activity. In certain instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or respite. Ohio maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include observation, verifying labels, and assistance organizing medication. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. There must be one bath or shower for every 8 residents and one toilet for every 8 residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include intermittent nursing services, medication administration, personal care, and supervision. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These include: securing emergency assistance, community procedures, residents rights, and job responsibilities. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as cognitive status review, medication review, functional status assessment, and psychological history.
