An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, support, and care to self-sufficient individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with appointments and transit, supervision of care, and support with daily activities. In some situations, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. The state of Ohio has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. Ohio Department of Health certifies this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance organizing medication, reminders, and assistance opening and taking medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include activities, personal care, medication administration, and assistance with self-administration of medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as psychological history, medical diagnoses, psychical history, and cognitive status review. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Assisted Living Program and the 1915(b)(c) Managed Care Demonstration Waiver called MyCare. There is a maximum occupancy of 4 residents per room. There must be one toilet for every 8 residents and one bath or shower for every 8 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 17. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include residents rights, securing emergency assistance, job responsibilities, and community procedures.
