An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides care, supervision, and support to healthy persons who do not need skilled nursing care. The services offered often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, skilled nursing, or respite. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications, medication administration, and medication reminders. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, medication administration, laundry, and housekeeping. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and A comprehensive assessment. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: self-determination, reporting, disaster procedures, and choice. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
