Assisted living communities offer care, supervision, and social opportunities to individuals around 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, dementia care, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $111,508 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $100,481 . Michigan has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses certifies this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council, and three daily meals and snacks must be provided. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, medication management, being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, and supervised personal care. Staff must obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: personal care, administration of medication, standard precautions, and staff training program based on the residents’ service plans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, and A comprehensive written assessment that that describes prescribed treatments and medications that must be provided to the community prior to admission. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications.
