Assisted living communities offer oversight, healthcare, and social events to people who are about 65 years of age or older. The services provided often include aid with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, nursing, or continuing care. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $9,292 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $8,373 . Michigan maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Human Services licenses supervises this type of community. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 21. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as The home must complete a service plan in cooperation with each resident and/or their representative, The service plan must be updated annually and following a significant change in health status, service plan identifies the individual’s need for services, and service plan identifies the individual’s need for activities. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include being aware of a resident’s general whereabouts, medication management, supporting a resident’s personal and social needs, and supervised personal care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication supervision and administration, reminding a resident to maintain his/her medication schedule in accordance with the prescription, and proper training of direct care workers to handle and administer medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide medical nutrition therapy if prescribed by a licensed health care professional, three daily meals and snacks must be provided, and Food must be prepared in accordance with the recommended daily dietary allowances of the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council. Public assistance is available through Medicaid State Plan. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: staff training program based on the residents’ service plans, safety and fire prevention, reporting requirements and documentation, and supervision.
