Assisted living communities administer social interaction, healthcare, and oversight to persons around 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide support with daily activities, outings for social activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as problematic behaviors, evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and treatment requirements. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These include: fire and life safety, their individual job requirements, emergency disaster plans, and Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications, residents’ ability to self-administer must be reviewed at least quarterly by a licensed health professionall, and medication administration. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, and assistance with self-administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be varied, meals must be properly prepared, meals must be palatable, and meals must be well-balanced. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents
