I would recommend Brandywine Living at Potomac to others. The staff, housekeeping, communication with the family and dining are all very very good. The PT is excellent. The only complaint that I have is with the director of the wellness center. She is not knowledgeable and does not keep up

About the facility
Cogir of Potomac

Set in the heart of one of the quietest residential suburbs of Washington, D.C., Cogir of Potomac is a genteel mix of luxurious facilities and a pastoral setting. The area around the Potomac River has been settled since the early 1700s, giving it historical significance. As an almost entirely residential neighborhood populated by large, single-family homes, it presents a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of the metro area. In fact, after driving through the picturesque neighborhoods and past the immaculate Falls Road Golf Course that sits next to the facilities, it’s easy to forget that our nation’s capital is just a 30-minute drive away.

One of the most cherished elements of the area is the excellent hiking at the Great Falls of Maryland, which is practically in the backyard. For those wanting a bit of retail therapy, the Westfield Montgomery Mall offers a mix of chain and local outlets.

Cogir of Potomac opened the stately Potomac branch in 2021. With 120 suites, residents and families can choose from a variety of floor plans from a semi-private Assisted Living Studio to the private Serenade Grand II, the most spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom option.

Review for Brandywine Potomac
I was drawn by the nice facilities and the price, but I was not happy with the level of care my mom received. She was injured several times including once that the ER nurse said she appeared to be bleeding severely for several hours. She flooded the entire floor of the memory care unit by leaving a sink running. When I visited it seemed like the residents were unengaged.

It's well worth visiting and considering
The staff was very welcoming, and they are well staffed. We are personally happy. They negotiated terms with us. We picked this community because of the location. They communicate well, and do a nice job. Overall, I am grateful that my loved one here.

just spectacular
Brandywine Community is brand new and so elegant it is like walking onto a luxury cruise ship. The second you walk through the doors you just gasp because its so gorgeous. There are assisted living communities that just give off that nursing home feel and have an odor but this is not that place. Management is very caring, accessible and it does not feel like a business but that this is their calling. The food is better then expected, it is better then eating at on the of restaurants here in town. The variety is extensive, and if there is something you do not like they will bring you a different menu to choose from - very accommodating and we would absolutely recommend this community to other families.

Beautiful Facility With Some Flaws
In the scheme of things, it really depends on the level of care needed for your loved one. There are some great things, and some horrible things. Facilities-wise it's absolutely top notch and top of the line. As far as the staff who are top of the food chain, it's very good. But when you get into the weeds - the people who are taking care of the elderly - it's horrendous. I understand we're in a time right now where service is nonexistent nationwide. But even so, if the right systems are in place, things don't fall between the cracks. Those systems aren't in place here. I think they're trying, but they're just understaffed and can't keep staff. The quality of the food is phenomenal, but the selection is horrendous. They keep revolving the same meals - lots of corned beef, meatloaf, and pastas. The activities manager just left, and even before that, the residents didn't really participate. But the staff weren't making an effort to go get people and encourage them to participate. There's a brand new activities director, so we'll see how that goes. The facility is beautiful and worth some of the frustrations. The hallways are double/triple the size of other places I toured. It's a very large, airy, spacious place. They just have ongoing staffing issues. I give them credit for admitting that they do see the problems, and they are trying to fix them.

This community was too expensive for what we were looking for. It was not our loved ones taste. It was too posh for her.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Maryland regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Maryland regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored Cogir of Potomac 8.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
