An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides aid, support, and supervision to self-sufficient seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or nursing. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene certifies this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs, meals must be well-balanced, meals must be varied, and meals must be palatable. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of subjects. These areas include Managers of programs licensed for five or more residents must complete 20 hours of Department-approved continuing education every 2 years, residents’ rights, fire and life safety, and basic first-aid. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as ability to self-administer medication, risk factor management needs, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and problematic behaviors. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance with self-administration of medications, occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, and supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission, staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, and physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container.
