Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individualized help. Assisted living communities frequently offer supervision of care, help with daily activities, and help with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, Alzheimer’s care, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and assisted living care. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, applying topical medications, and assisting residents with self-administration. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include assistance with medications, Residents’ rights, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, and training necessary to carry out assigned job duties. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
