Assisted living communities offer residential living communities and health care for seniors who may need help with dressing or showering. Services offered often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, respite, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, whether family supports are available, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Staff must receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, including the special needs of residents with dementia, and reporting requirements. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and assisted living care. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, assisting residents with storage of medications, and assisting with an Epi pen.
