Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers care, supervision, and aid to healthy seniors who do not need skilled nursing support. Services offered often include aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, hospice, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, and personal preferences relative to care needs. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include reporting requirements, Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, emergency preparedness, and 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and assisting residents with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and described as personal services.
