Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as individual help. Assisted living communities often provide aid with transit and appointments, care supervision, and aid with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, respite, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. Staff must receive training in a number of areas. These include: 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, general infection control principles, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, and emergency preparedness. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
