Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized care. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with appointments and transportation, assistance with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific rules associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and described as personal services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and applying topical medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: hand hygiene, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, and reporting requirements.
