Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers support, assistance, and supervision to independent seniors who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often include help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific standards associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of areas. These include: proper food preparation, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, emergency first-aid and CPR, and assistance with medications. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, assisting with an Epi pen, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
