Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individualized care. The types of service provided often include assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, “aging in place”, or nursing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, licensed nursing staff may administer medications, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, providing assistance with activities of daily living, reporting incidents, and resident behavior and needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, and personal care services. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
