An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, support, and care to medically stable persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities often provide assistance with daily activities, help with appointments and transit, and supervision of care. In select situations, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or nursing care. In Delaware, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $72,414 . Delaware maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS), Division of Long Term Care Residents Protection certifies this type of community. Staff are required to obtain education in a variety of areas. These areas include 1(2 hours) of annual training, use of service agreements, fire and life safety, and basic food service. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer medication, medication review by an rn, and assistance with self-administering medications. Public assistance is available through The Delaware Diamond State Health Plan Plus. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts a Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) with the resident, The UAI collects information about the residents psychosocial needs, The UAI collects information about the resident’s mental and physical status, and communities must develop a service agreement with each resident. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include aundry and housekeeping, access to appropriate health care and social services, opportunities for social interaction, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include A dietician or nutritionist must ensure that menus are nutritionally adequate, a minimum of three meals a day at regular intervals, and nourishing and palatable meals adjusted to meet individual preferences to the extent reasonably possible.
