Assisted living communities provide oversight, healthcare, and social interaction to people around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for organized activity, help with appointments and transportation, and care supervision. In some instances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, and medications, treatments, and other required nursing services. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These areas include community policies and procedures, 10-hour orientation, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, and applicable regulations. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include medication administration, health promotion, nursing services, and assistance with self-administered medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day.
