Assisted living communities provide organized social events and apartment style housing as well as individual care. Assisted living communities usually offer care supervision, outings for leisurely activity, and help with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing, respite, or hospice. In Connecticut, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $58,560 . The state of Connecticut has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing certifies this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, disease prevention, assistance with self-administered medications, and assistance with ADLs. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , opening medication packages, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These include: community policies and procedures, applicable regulations, assisted living philosophy, and aides must pass a competency exam.
