Nursing Homes

A nursing home community provides residence to two or more persons who are not related by blood or by marriage to the administrator. A nursing home community provides its occupants with care administered by on-site nurses. These caregivers provide maintenance, personal care and other health related services for those who cannot care for themselves due to the effects of aging.

Nursing homes can be a helpful and easy living alternative for individuals 65 years and above, however nursing homes will often admit individuals 55 and older which is for other senior care types. A large number of nursing home residents are individuals who have mental or physical disabilities, have incontinence issues, require assistance with daily tasks such as bathing, or experience difficulty with vision and hearing. There are some services that may come at a cost to residents which can include special care services not included in the community’s Medicaid payment, personal clothing, and specially prepared food. A large number of occupants are single women who have smaller social support groups, and about 50% of nursing home residents are over 85 years old. As a resident of a nursing home, you can expect the right to participate in activities, to manage your money, be treated with respect, and get proper privacy, property, and living arrangements. Many occupants of nursing homes may have behavioral problems. These can consist of verbal outbursts, resisting assistance, or a tendency to wander.
