Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers supervision, assistance, and care to self-sufficient seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with transportation and appointments, chances for social activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer nursing care, dementia care, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin maintains specific rules associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include including personal care, activity programming for persons with dementia, information and referral, and supervision. Staff must obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include challenging behaviors, provision of personal care, first-aid, and community policies and procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
