Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer care, social interaction, and supervision to people who are about 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often include assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may offer nursing care, hospice, or respite. The state of Texas has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities supervises this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record, and obtaining medications from a pharmacy. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, Therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s physician must be provided according to the service plan, and The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning. The maximum occupancy is 4 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as interviews, and home visits, a comprehensive assessment , and must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: abuse/neglect, federal laws, resident and provider rights and responsibilities, and skills for working with residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, assistance with activities of daily living, activity and/or social program for residents, and supervision or direct administration of medications.
