Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide residential communities and aid for your loved one who need help with taking medication or cooking food. The services offered often include help with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or continuing care. Texas has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS) licenses several types of assisted living communities certifies this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include general supervision or oversight, activity and/or social program for residents, assistance with activities of daily living, and supervision or direct administration of medications. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include exceptions must be specifically approved by the Department, The meals must be served daily, at regular times, with no more than a 16-hour span between a substantial evening meal and breakfast the following morning, menus must be prepared to provide a balanced and nutritious diet and such as that recommended by the national food and nutrition board, and communities must provide at least three balanced and nutritious meals or the equivalent per day. There must be one bath or shower for every 10 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. In total, there can be no more than 4 residents to a room. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: confidentiality, financial management, basic principles of management, and skills for working with residents, families, and other professionall providers ethics. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive assessment , must address the residents individual needs, preferences, and strengths, and interviews, and home visits. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with taking medications, reminders to take medications at the prescribed time, and listing the medication taken on a resident’s medication profile record. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 demonstration managed care waiver program–called STAR+PLUS.
